TOPIC:
Introduction to Workflow with Kathleen Dollard
Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) is Microsoft’s entry into space that previously
had a very high bar to entry of cost and proprietary training.
At heart, WF is a meta-programming language that organizes a set of tasks, also
called activities, for execution. The strength of WF arises from the design which
allows pluggable components, interactions with services and other external entities,
and support for workflows that may run for weeks or months. We’ll spend the morning
building workflows with minimal code to learn the activities and particularly flow
control because workflows have their own level or programming - a step removed from
the main code of your application. In the afternoon we’ll move into designing workflows,
particularly granularity issues and interacting with the outside world. You’ll see
several workflow types, including multiple applications interacting via a workflow,
state machine workflows and embedding the workflow designer in a WinForms application
for workflow creation on the fly.

Kathleen
has been developing business applications for over 20 years and working with .NET
since the early betas. She’s been a Microsoft MVP for over ten years, was the founding
president of the
Northern Colorado
.NET SIG, and is an active member of the Denver Visual Studio User Group.
As an independent consultant, she has had the opportunity to work in a variety of
domains, including the finance and justice sectors. Kathleen has worked extensively
with application code generation and is the author of
Code Generation in Microsoft NET (from Apress). She has a monthly
column “Ask Kathleen” in Visual Studio Magazine and has published dozens of articles on a range of .NET topics. As an INETA and conference speaker, she’s spoken in 26
states and 5 countries. Custom training is part of GenDotNet’s business and her
full day sessions on Windows Workflow at DevConnections have been well attended
and received good reviews.
